I gained a BSc (Hons) in Physics at Durham University after serving in the RAFVR as a pilot during the war, then was at Marconi Research from 1950 to 1989. Formed Radar Display Section in 1958 which designed the first transistorised radar display and the bright "Distance from Touchdown" system which could be viewed in the Control Tower and enabled Heathrow to start using both runways. In 1968 I formed the Semi-conductor Research Group which produced a Semi-conductor (GaASP) Display. I still have the article about some of these somewhere. In 1982 I formed the Avionics Research Laboratory at Baddow which designed and made a very high resolution wide band radar, capable of identifying ships and aircraft from their silhouettes.
