S511 Airfield Surveillance Radar - Installations

Page history last edited by Ian Gillis 7 years, 2 months ago Saved with comment

Introduction

The S511 ASR is arguably the biggest selling radar Marconi Radar produced over the years, amounting to some 50 "channels" - a diversity system counts as two channels. This page summarises the deployment of the S511/S511H radar.

Note: The words "International Airport" are omitted from relevant sites.

(Input from Norman Davies).

Deployment

United Kingdom

  • Bushy Hill test site (reference and development)
  • Southend
  • Newcastle
  • Liverpool John Lennon
  • Woodford (BAE)
  • Coventry
  • East Midlands
  • Bristol
  • Warton (BAE) – including LVA
  • Filton (BAE)
  • Norwich
  • Cardiff – Including Janus mounted LVA
  • Castlemartin Range (Wales) – Range Safety Radar (Norcontrol Prime, EASAT Antenna*, S511 Tx/Rx)

*This antenna, developed by EASAT, was the prototype for the one later used for Raytheon’s ASR-11 solid state ASR. EASAT used the MRC anechoic chamber at Baddow in its development! In this application it was developed to provide very high back angle cover, but proved ideal for the characteristics of solid state ASRs and the emerging operational requirement for enhanced high angle cover for civil ASRs.

Overseas

  • Canada
  • East London - South Africa
  • Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur International Airport - Transportable Radar and Display system (TRAD) initially deployed at Subang, relocated to KLIA.
  • Fujairah (United Arab Emirates)
  • Yugoslavia (S511 + Messenger MSSR) – 2 systems for ATC
  • Poland (dual channel S511H + Messenger MSSR) – Gdansk and Krakow airports
  • Paraguay (S511 + Messenger MSSR) – Guarani International Airport, Cuidad del Este

(Paraguay probably wins the prize for the most unusual STQ (Site Technical Query) ever – when the site parameters were entered into the sub-contractor's display system the PPI produced square range “rings”. Traced to a software bug, it turned out the subcontractor had never tried entering a negative magnetic variation.)

  • Sudan (S511 + Messenger MSSR) – Khartoum International Airport
  • Bombay

  • Queen Alia, Jordan

  • Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Arizona USA - evaluation - later installed at Lahr, Germany - see Robin Webb's bio.

  • Lahr, Germany - see Grand Canyon installation.

An S511 was installed at Flagstaff on the edge of the Grand Canyon for evaluation by the FAA - Robin Webb knows all about it, Paul Baird was the instigator I think.

MRSL teamed with Inisel in Spain for the supply of S511s to 8 Spanish airports. Inisel built the S511s under license.

Perhaps the most complete S511 installations were those in Poland. They were the higher powered S511H with the co-axial magnetron, were dual channel systems and were also equipped with the optional weather channel. Completing the sytems were co-mounted dual channel Messenger monopulse SSRs. They were installed at Gdansk and Krakow airports. (Perhaps Norman Davies or Nigel Dalby could confirm the configuration)

Not so long ago there was some input/a query to MOGS from Poland about the S511s there - can't remember the outcome.

I tried to contact the man who sent the original email to the Veterans Site. The Veterans had lost the original email so I didn't have a return address. I tried sending emails via the Polish Air Traffic people in Warsaw, Gdansk and Krakow but none replied.
