Tributes from Colleagues

Sad news about Julien. He was one of the first Marconi people I worked with as he was Section Chief for the Secondary Radar development engineers who moved across from Elliotts around 1970.
Steve.

Julien was a dedicated, conscientious and gentlemanly engineer, and a pleasure to work with.
Ian.

I was very sorry to hear of Julien's death. I shared an office with him for a while at Baddow in the early 60s and greatly enjoyed working with such a clever, dedicated, very straightforward, pragmatic and entertaining Engineer.
I had heard about his problems and was surprised and delighted to see him arrive at the Orange Tree having driven himself there, though only just able to walk. Chatting to him, he seemed just the same as ever and it was hard to imagine how unwell he was - he was very brave as well!!
Matty.

Very sorry to hear about Julian. I worked with him for a number of years, a nice guy who was very easy to get on with.
Brian.

Very sad news. I had the pleasure of working with Julien a few times, including the SIMCATS project, and his pleasant company at MOGS Christmas lunches.
John M.

I'm so sorry to hear of Julien's passing.  I worked with him when I was in Systems, and it was always a happy relationship - a real gentleman!  he will be greatly missed.
John L.

Very sad news. I was sorry to hear that he was sick when I visited the Orange Tree in February. Julian was my first Boss at Marconi after my apprenticeship. At that time I was a shy young man with not much self confidence and Julian was the perfect mentor and boss.  He would tell me that of course I could do it, when I showed hesitation.  His door was always open and he would lead me by asking the right questions to guide me in the right direction and then tell me: "See, you knew how to do it all along".  He never told anyone what to do. He would ask you and you knew he would never ask of you anything he would not do himself.  I think he was respected by everyone who worked for him.
If anyone is still in contact with his family please pass on my heartfelt condolences.  Julian was one of the few that guided me and taught me, helping me to be a better and productive person.  I will say a prayer for him at Mass and I will never forget this gentle and good man.
Geoff.

I knew Julien, though I cannot recall that I ever worked with him. To repeat what one of his colleagues has said – he was a gentleman. I last saw him about five years ago at Claydon House, the National Trust house near Buckingham. Julien said he was having a day out with his daughter who lived nearby.
Peter.

Comment from Roy W Simons:

I was Julien Ryley's godfather and my wife knew him from birth, as they lived next door to each other in Brentwood.
