Tributes - June 2017

From Adam Wood (Chelmsford Science & Engineering Society)
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of John Whittaker (`Little John`), who died peacefully on Sunday 11 June 2017 surrounded by his close friends, following an 18-month struggle with dementia. He had recently celebrated his 80th birthday a month before on 19 May 2017.
John worked at Marconi Radar from 1961 (having been an apprentice in the years leading up to that) until the mid-90s.

From Mike Plant via Brian Burgess
John died on June 11th, ending a period in his life that has not been an
easy one, some reading this will know much more than I do. I remember
the happier times when a group I am proud to associate with grew into a
long lasting one, formed from members of the 1956/7/8 Tech. apprentices
intake and boosted by several from the 1957 Student intake, or correctly
those who were demoted from the latter...
John will be cremated at Chelmsford on June 30th , at 2.30 pm.

From Alan Matthews
Sorry to hear about John Whittaker, I knew him for many years and always found him very happy company.
I did not really work with him directly and rather lost contact some time ago but have very fond memories of our infrequent associations.

From John MacDonald

I knew John Whittaker for almost all of the time I worked at Baddow - 1960 - 1965. He was one of the folks who made work enjoyable and productive. We were part of a group of seven engineers who shared accommodation in a "rambling rental" at 219, London Road - Brian Hutchings, John Carpenter. et al. When that became inhabitable, John & I rented Tom Gaskell's place in Galleywood. John is one of those people you meet along life's pathways that you always remember with a smile.

Does anyone have a photo of Little John? I've searched the MOGS archives to no avail…
