Work Experience

My apprenticeship started with a company repairing domestic electrical equipment, radio and TV.  Subsequently I spent two years in a Radar Drawing Office as an Improver Apprentice draughtsman.
Seven years were spent in the Royal Air Force, initially at OCTU and Pilot training and finally as a Radar Supervisor/Fighter Controller. For three years of this period I was the Senior Radar Supervisor on a large Air Defence Radar Station responsible for the radar operational efficiency and training.
After RAF service I was employed by Cossor Radar Ltd as a development engineer and was involved on such projects as TWT preamplifiers, quartz delay lines, radar position monitors, EHT power supplies and display room operational lighting.
A large part of my career was spent with Marconi Radar Systems Ltd, employed as a Radar Systems Engineer and subsequently as a Principal Systems Engineer. At one period I was promoted to an Assistant Chief of Systems with responsibility for seven systems engineers.
During this period my main specialities were overall system philosophy with particular regard to operational aspects of Air Traffic Control and Air Defence systems (including D & DH operational acceptance testing and flight trials).  I was also involved in various study groups on AWACS, UKADGE, system updating and maintenance philosophy.  Part of my experience involved preparation of proposals for major systems, including costing and timescale aspects.
After leaving Marconi I was employed by a South African Company (ex Marconi South Africa Ltd).  Part of this time I held the position of Systems Design and Planning Group Manager, handling both radar and communications projects, and the remainder as a Radar Specialist - one of my tasks in this role concerned an ATC Simulator system.  I also carried out all the company's radar flight testing and was Trials Manager for some fourteen trials involving TMA, SSR and PAR equipment.  On one PAR project I was the Project Manager.
I then became a self-employed consultant and have been involved in the preparation and vetting of tenders for an airport radar system, been the Technical Consultant and Flight Test Manager for an airborne radar project involving Russian IFF equipment, and carried out five sets of acceptance flight trials on ATC and air defence radars.  In addition I have been part of a team assessing tender bids for the upgrading of a large ATC system, have carried out a study on re-siting various radars and communications necessitated by a major International Airport modernisation and assisted in the siting and installation of primary radar at a small airport in the Balkans.
For a number of years I was associated, as a Consultant, with the provision of  the ATC system for Antigua, being involved in the project from its inception through to its final hand-over.  During this time I was involved in such aspects as initial siting, technical specification writing, vetting of tenders and on-site liaison.  Towards the end of the project I spent some six months as Site Consultant to the Antiguan Government during the installation and acceptance phases. I witnessed all the acceptance tests, supervised the Flight Trials and generally advised and organised the final acceptance of the system on behalf of the Government.
