"Ian Freshwater - A Brief Career Summary:

I joined in 1963 in the Central Division then based in New Street. In June 1964 the division moved to the then new site in Waterhouse lane. In 1973 Radar Division was set up as a separate company and the decision was made to split Central Division in two, I was put into the Radar part which became the Support Division of Radar. I then took over the Purchasing section of the Support Division, being responsible for all the Spares & Repairs purchasing. We transferred to Writtle Road in 1975; then in 1984 the Spares & Repairs Department of the Division was moved to Saint Mary's House owing to shortage of space at Writtle Road. Then in 1988 the Company decided that all purchasing should be done by the Purchasing Department of the Supplies Division, so I and my section were transferred to the Purchasing Department.

In 1992 came the big bang, closing the Writtle Road site and moving production to Leicester. So after 29 years I was redundant. After a couple of years doing odd jobs I obtained a post in the Purchasing Department in Basildon and I stayed there for 6 years. When BAE took over they did not like anyone over 55 and so 4 of us in the department all had to go on the same day. That was my Marconi career at an end, but I was lucky I was financially able to retire at 62 and have loved it.
