Input from Roy Simons

Len Whitaker joined Marconi Research Labs before the war and as he had poor eyesight he remained in the lab as a member of T.L.Eckersleys  propagation section.  He designed circuits to improve the classification of the atmospheric layers.  After the war he and I had a number of walking holidays together.  When the fixed coil display program was in hand, Len became responsible for the very accurate time base generators for use on the system.  He also devised a number of analysis  displays for allowing the operator to assess the number of aircraft in a large echo.  Subsequently he was appointed Section chief of the Datamation display labs and initiated the first transistorized displays.   When MRSL was formed, Len stayed with Research Division until he retired.  In 1953 he married Joan Parker an artist who had been recruited  into the drawing office.  They lived in a house that they designed called Fairwinds in Danbury.
