Acronyms and Abbreviations

ATC Abbreviations

The world of Air Traffic Control is replete with acronyms. This list of ATC acronyms was compiled by Ian Gillis; it achieved iconic status and was often the subject of humorous banter with John Lancaster. The acronyms were not just TLAs (Three-Letter Abbreviations) but extended to six or more. Ian tells us his favourite acronym was "MAESTRO" with seven letters - it is a French-developed software system for sequencing landing aircraft and is distinguished by having both English and French versions of the full phrase.

See http://www.naviair.dk/EN-ATM/MAESTRO

The list was last updated in 1998 but may be of use in decoding contemporary acronyms.

MOD Acronyms and Abbreviations

This official list comprises some 373 pages for use by contractors. The date is unknown, but again it may be of use to decode older documents.
